Research the Area
Before even moving into your rental, you want to do some research and see what the neighborhood is like. It really is all about location. Research the crime rates in the area, talk with some of the neighbors and visit at different times during the day and night to see what is happening.
Check the Lighting
Next, you want to check the lighting. You don't want there to be areas that are dark and not being monitored around the building or complex. It makes it too easy for people to sneak around. Check all the hallways, parking areas, storage rooms, waste management areas, and other public areas to make sure there are security cameras and good lighting.
Upgrade Door Locks
Hopefully, the home will already be equipped with a new and secure lock but if not, discuss this with your landlord and see if it can be upgraded from a regular lock to a more secure deadbolt. You don't want previous tenants or anyone else other than the landlord having access to your new home.
Cover the Windows
A lot of criminals in Austin will also check out an area before actually targeting a home to burglarize. This means they may walk by the property several times, hoping to catch a glimpse of the items that are inside.
With that being said, one of the easiest ways to protect your rental home is by making sure the windows are properly covered. Keep the blinds shut when you aren't home and after dark to keep prying eyes away.
Get to Know the Neighbors
Meeting your neighbors is a great way to get extra eyes on the property. If they notice anything suspicious, they can report back to you. When neighbors get to know each other, it just makes achieving a higher level of security much easier.
Purchase a Safe
Having a small safe in the home is also a good way to protect some of your valuables. So, even if someone were to somehow gain access to the property, having your items in a hidden safe can go that extra mile to protect them. You can store jewelry, cash, important documents, and whatever else you want to keep safe.

You will not have to drill any holes, and it won't be a long, drawn-out, and extensive project. Something as simple as door and window sensors can easily be installed and removed without any damage.
